Amonestar – Admonish

       A. At times we use N. T. words without examining them carefully.

       B. A careful examination of them reveals a gold mine.

       C. An example of this is the word “admonish.”

I. Enseñar y amonestar.

I. Teach and admonish.

       A. There is no exact word to translate the Greek word (noutheteo). The versions say “teach,” “exhort,” “admonish,” “warn.”

               1. Literally it means putting in the mind or heart, to impart understanding, with the purpose of correcting or straightening out.

               2. The word presupposes some wrong, problem, opposition that should be overcome. “Admonish” wants to correct the mind, improve the spiritual attitude, in order to make the necessary correction.

               3. No significa “castigar.”

               3. It does not mean “punísh.” Rather it wants to influence the mind so that the necessary correction is made so that punishment will not be necessary.

       B. Although it is very connected to “teach,” It doesn’t mean precisely “teach”; observe that in Col. 3:16 both words appear.

       C. Teach has to do principally with the imparting of positive truths.

       D. Admonish has mainly in view the things that are wrong and call for warning.

II. Textos que dicen “amonestar”.

II. Texts that say “admonish.”

       A. Hech.

       A. Acts 20:31, “"Therefore, watch, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears. Observe the persistence and the compassion of admonishing.

       B. Rom. 15:14, “Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.”

               1. Here are three indispensable requirements for admonishing: be full of goodness, full of knowledge and capable of admonishing.

               2. Every member should admonish, but first he should prepare himself to do it. Otherwise he can do more harm than good.

       C. 1 Cor. 4:14, “I do not write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children.” The purpose of admonishing is not to shame but to correct in love.

       D. Col. 1:28, “And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ.”

       E. Col. 3:16, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

       F. 1 Thess. 5:12, “And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you… 14  And we urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all men.”

       G. 2 Thess. 3:15, “Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.”

III. Toda la iglesia debe amonestar.

III. The whole church should admonish.

20:31; Col. 1:28.

       A. Paul is a good example of this: Acts 20:31; Col. 1:28.

       B. But let’s read Rom. 15:14 again: “Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.” This is addressed to all the members.

       C. This indicates that admonishing is not the exclusive obligation of elders, evangelists or others, but that every member should do it.

       D. Paul names the requirements: be full of goodness, full of knowledge, capable of admonishing. Every member should meet these requirements.

IV. “Amonestar” implica que hay problema.

IV.  “Admonish” implies that there is a problem.

       A. “Admonish” implies that there is some obstacle to overcome. Something is wrong. (“Teach” does not imply a problem, but “admonish” does.)

       B. “Admonish” has the purpose of correcting the wrong and resolving the problem, not by means of punishment, but by means of influencing the mind. (The word “mind” is part of the word “admonish”).

       C. “Admonish” implies, specifically, the need for change in the person admonished.  The fundamental purpose of admonishing is to bring about a change in the person, whether of character or in conduct.

V. No tanto “¿Por qué?” sino específicamente, “¿Qué?”

V. Not so much “Why?” but specifically “What?”

       A. Remember that “admonish” has as its goal to straighten out the individual so that he will be transformed into the likeness of Christ (Rom. 8:29; 2 Cor. 3:18).

       B. 2 Sam. 12:1-7, Nathan the prophet confronts David with his deeds that were condemned. He said, “You are the man.”

(refrenar, impedir, corregir).

       C. 1 Sam. 3:13, the failure of Eli: “his sons brought a curse on themselves and he did not rebuke them.

       D. The explanation is found in 1 Sam. 2:22, “Why do you do such things?”

       E. To ask “Why?” provides for a mountain of excuses. Why? Seeks for justifying causes. Then we don’t admonish because we have too much sympathy for the excuses. “Under those circumstances you were not responsible.” This denies 1 Cor. 10:13.

       F. Así hacen muchos siquiatras y sicólogos (y aun ancianos y predicadores): ¿Por qué esto? ¿Por qué aquello? Se malgasta mucho tiempo preguntando por qué.

       F. This is what many psychiatrists and sociologists (and even preachers) do: Why this? Why that? Much time is wasted asking why.

       G. Why opens the door to speculations and displaces responsibility, but what leads to solutions. What did you do? What should you do to correct it?

VI.

VI. The purpose of admonishing is not to punísh but to help. Gal. 6:1, 2.

       A. 1 Cor. 4:14, “I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn (admonish) you.”

       B. 1 Thess. 2:7, 11, “But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children… 11 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children.”

       C. To admonish implies affectionate concern, like that of parents toward their children.

       D. This is seen in Eph. 6:4, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”

       E. Also in Col. 3:21, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children, that they may not lose heart.”

       F. The idea of punishment, even disciplinary punishment, is not considered in the concept of admonishing. Rather, it is motivated by love and profound preoccupation for the person being admonished.

       G. Sin, any sin, is like spiritual cancer. It causes damage, much damage. It contaminates us, enslaves us, destroys us because it separates us from God. We admonish to repair that damage.

       H. Paul even admonished with tears. Acts 20:31, “"Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.” Now emotions are suppressed but Jesus, Paul and Timothy shed tears to show their concern for people.

       I. Col. 1:28 expresses it clearly: “And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ.” This is the true purpose of admonishing.

VII. Debemos amonestar con Escrituras.

VII. We should admonish with Scriptures.

       A. 2 Tim. 3:16, 17,  this text is not only to prove that the Scriptures are inspired. Also it emphasizes that the

Scriptures accomplish what Paul says in Col. 1:28.

       B. As much time is wasted asking “Why?”, also much time is wasted “admonishing” without using the Bible texts.

       C. Los “yo pienso”, “yo sugiero”, “fuera major”, etc. no llevan mucho peso.

       C. Expressions like “I think,” “I suggest,” “it would be better,” don’t carry much weight. What counts and carries weight is the word of God.
